Editor's verdict
ElevenLabs for voice as the product. Descript for voice inside the edit.
ElevenLabs is the right answer when voice itself is the output — narration for a faceless YouTube channel, multilingual product demos, audio versions of newsletters, voice clones for conversational AI agents. The realism gap over every competitor is the kind you hear in the first ten seconds, and the dubbing workflow into 30+ languages is in a class of one.
Descript is the right answer when voice is one input inside a larger video or podcast project. The voice-cloning feature (Overdub) is excellent for fixing muffed lines in a recording you're already editing, but it's not where Descript's leverage lives — that's in the transcript-driven editing workflow. Paying for Descript primarily for voice generation is overpaying.
The biggest misconception is that these tools overlap. They don't, much. ElevenLabs is a voice platform with no editor. Descript is an editor with a voice feature. Most serious creators end up using both — Descript for the edit, ElevenLabs for narration tracks the editor was never going to generate.
Choose ElevenLabs if the deliverable is audio. Choose Descript if the deliverable is video or a podcast you're editing yourself.
